Paul Kalemkiarian Sr. founded Wine of the Month Club in 1972 while managing a small liquor store in Palos Verdes Estates, California. His son Paul Jr. took over in 1989 and runs it today. The wines are still selected through a rigorous two-tiered tasting panel. Paul Jr. and his cellarmaster evaluate 300 to 400 wines each month and select twelve. That discipline, maintained for over fifty years, is more impressive than any algorithm.
The question in 2026 is whether it remains competitive against clubs built with modern infrastructure and venture capital-funded introductory offers.
The Eleven Club Options
Most clubs offer you three choices. Wine of the Month offers eleven distinct membership types covering different quality tiers, regional focuses, red-only and white-only options, and a Mystery Case option for the genuinely adventurous. The flexibility of frequency is also exceptional: monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly across most club options.
The Classic Series at $38 per month for two bottles – one domestic, one international – remains one of the strongest value propositions at its tier. The wines I received were well-selected: a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir I would recommend paying $28 for in a wine shop, and a Cotes du Rhone blanc that was fairly interesting for the variety.
The Honest Limitation
The website looks like it was designed in 2008. The tasting notes that accompany shipments are informative but brief compared to what SommSelect or Gold Medal provides. If modern UX matters to you, there are better options. But if you want a club that has spent fifty years building relationships with boutique producers worldwide and delivering consistent value – this remains relevant.
